The first "Action-RPG" game is? Empty The first "Action-RPG" game is?

Post by Arala Cran Mon Oct 01, 2012 4:22 pm

I'm just wondering, what was the very first Action-RPG game that was ever created that no longer was turn-based?

I certainly know that Kingdom Hearts is not the first (though it is a good one) along with the rest I know, such as Star Ocean series, Phantasy Star, Graal, and so on.

......or IS Star Ocean the first one? Surprised

lol figures. I think the first thought that comes to mind certainly MUST be something to do with very early Star Ocean games. Roflcopter-Roll

Simon's Quest comes to mind. Arguably The Legend of Zelda on the NES is an early pioneer of Action RPGs as well.

Fufufu, we need more titles and samples Laughing

Perhaps to be two in tow: the first one you have played and the first you can discover which is the actual first? Razz

Let's have a look and many ideas coming in!

hmm. well, Zelda is mostly an 'action-adventure' type since it doesn't technically have a level-up system like typical RPGs do. but as for the first action-rpg, i'd have to say the first Ys game for sega master system

Edit: but after looking at release dates, i'd say the first one was Zelda 2: Adventure of Link for NES. it was out 5 months before Ys

It does pioneer a number of mechanics used in ARPGs though such as overworlds and saving on the cartridge. Technically when you beat a dungeon boss and get an extra heart container, you could consider that as 'levelling up'

yeah, i was gonna make the same argument about heart containers, but in terms of other stats (agility, strength, accuracy, etc) none of those are changed throughout the game. it's pretty much purely dependent upon your equipment
